Data Engineer

Location: The Hague, NL

Working Pattern: Full-time, on-site (Freelance)

Clearance Requirement: Candidates must already hold a valid NATO Secret, or an equivalent national clearance level or higher.

 Contract Duration: March 2026 to December 2026

 

Our client, a primary supplier to multiple NATO frameworks, is looking for a skilled Data Engineer to design, implement, and maintain the data infrastructure required for efficient and reliable processing of various data types.

 

The successful candidate will collaborate with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements, identify sources, and implement processes for transforming and loading data into target systems. The Data Engineer will ensure the integrity, availability, and security of data throughout its lifecycle and continuously optimise data pipelines to meet evolving business needs.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines for both batch and near real-time processing.
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists, Analysts, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and implement data solutions.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with security best practices throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines and AI systems to maintain performance and reliability.
  • Implement containerised applications using Docker and orchestrate them with Kubernetes.
  • Utilise cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) for data storage, processing, and deployment.
  • Apply software development best practices, including version control, CI/CD, unit, and functional testing.
  • Maintain documentation and implement data governance processes to support regulatory and internal compliance.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a nationally recognised/certified university in Computer Science, Data Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
  • Candidates without a degree may qualify with ≥6 years of extensive and progressive experience in data engineering or related roles.

 

Experience & Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of data engineering concepts, including data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, and data governance.
  • Experience in data lakes and pipelines, handling both structured and unstructured data.
  • Proficiency with Python for data engineering tasks and integration.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools to ensure pipeline and system reliability.
  • Solid knowledge of data security practices, including encryption, access controls, authentication/authorisation, and compliance.
  • Understanding of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Strong grasp of software development best practices (version control, CI/CD, testing).

 

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, on-site at The Hague, NL.
  • Standard office hours unless project demands require flexibility.
  • Access to NATO-classified information; must hold NATO Secret clearance.
